A need to belong, to be part of others, or to support people in their endeavors, even though they are relative strangers to us? Maybe all of those.

Curiously, fandom does not depend on the success of the chosen performer. There are football fans who cheer just as loudly for years in support of their home team, which usually never wins, as there are fans who cheer for the world championship team. Some choose the underdog, some choose the current victor.

When I was young, I was crazy for jockeys and flat-track racing horses (Secretariat). Then it was Olympic gymnasts (Nadia Komenich) and skaters (Sergei and Katia Grinkov). After that, it was heavy metal rock stars (too many to name). Now, it's actors (Judi Dench and Derek Jacobi at the top of the long, long list) and authors (currently crushing on Erin Morgenstern, long time fan of Shakespeare and Diana Gabaldon).

The list is inclusive, however, as I still have a warm spot in my heart for the jockeys, horses, gymnasts, skaters, and rock stars. My fandom includes new genres to the ranks, but does not kick the old ones out the back door.Marchelinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11201825708442679157noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1365244084462704027.post-68856323322211358992011-11-20T14:49:16.523+00:002011-11-20T14:49:16.523+00:00Wow, you write well about racing. I am so annoyed with myself---knew this was coming, and forgot to check US racing channels to see if we had it (in general, we get very little National Hunt because, of course, most of the American racing public hasn't a clue how to bet it).

What a great day---and what an account. I could see you on the chair, the children yelling and Pigeon doing her bit. Had tears in my eyes.

Bird
PS Hate that MM and KS will meet in the King George. Is it absolutely too sentimental to hope for them to run one-two? So what.
