Between the idea
And the reality
Between the motion
And the act
Falls the Shadow
Between the conception
And the creation
Between the emotion
And the response
Falls the Shadow
Between the desire
And the spasm
Between the potency
And the existence
Between the essence
And the descent
Falls the Shadow
TS. Eliot.
Beautiful.

Anne - so lovely to hear from you. Have been thinking of you lately - is it near the time for the baby? Hope you and he/she are doing well.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this poem.
ReplyDeleteThank YOU!
Pat - so glad you like it. I am mad for TS. It's the last three stanzas of The Hollow Men, as I'm sure you know, which is all very dark and sardonic and cynical at the beginning, but then goes all lyrical here, before he reverts to the not a bang but a whimper ending. I know he was a most curious gent, but I do think he was a genius, and that's not a word I use a lot.
ReplyDeleteLove The Hollow Men. Love TS. Eliot. I'm going to get that off the shelf and read it again.
ReplyDeleteAnd I always love the darling Pigeon x
I love that poem. When I am feeling gloomy, Eliot always cheers me up-- either by deepening it so much that I come around the other side (The Hollow Men, The Dry Salvages) or otherwise (Prufrock, Portrait of a Lady). Thank you.
ReplyDeleteAnd Ash Wednesday, oh, Ash Wednesday.
