Happy New Year

Posted by Tania Kindersley.

Of course it was all perfectly lovely, in the end. There was chatting, laughing, fine wines, good food, stories of the old days, and singing. (Moral of the story: if you are brought up by a father who sang you Irish rebel songs from the cradle, you never quite throw that off.) I go into the new year with the ambition to write many books, which is vague but good.

The camera battery died, and I only had time once it had charged up to take one rather blurry picture of the hill. This feels like a good metaphor in my drive against the perfection genies.

As there were no photographs today, I thought perhaps it would be a nice excuse to offer you a canine greatest hits, from 2010:

Good to know that I may start 2011 on a note of slight self-indulgence. Although I have decided that it could be seen as a blast of hope: if such beauty exists in the world, then 2011 cannot be all bad. Or, on a more realistic note: I am very lucky to have such exceptionally charming dogs, and even luckier that the dear readers do not seem to mind that I put up endless pictures of them here. What else is a blog for?

May I thank you all for your wonderfully generous support in the last year. Blogging still feels very new and curious to me, and, as you may have noticed, most days I have hardly any idea what I am doing. It is a fascinating and novel medium, and I think that if I concentrate hard enough I shall eventually get to the bottom of it. It is an interesting thing to do in itself, and I find myself enjoying it much more than I ever dreamt, but what really makes it worth it is the goodness and kindness of the readers. I cannot say this enough. So: thank you. And I hope that you all have a very, very happy new year.

  2. It is already the second of January here and I am quite excited about going back home!!! Thank you for all the posts you do - I am not very conversant about the political stuff going on but I love to read about it all the same.. and thank you for the pictures - I am beginning to look at trees and especially lichen in a different way. I was not aware of the lichen before though it has been around! I will not bore you by going into raptures over the dogs because that is my usual. Thank you once again for giving me such pleasure with this blog.

Have missed you and the Ladyships and the blog enormously and am going to have a glorious evening of catch up.
I too can concur with the rebel songs, I was raised on them too.... My grandmother a great friend of De Valera and I've never forgotten what and where I've come from.

  9. Dear Tania,

A very Happy New Year to you. You get full credit for a very entertaining blog with its thought-provoking and smile-inducing views of the world and okay most of the credit for the pictures but the dogs are just so naturally beautiful and the scenery as well that it's quite a distinct advantage. Umm no, make that full credit for the pics as well as I think you bring the best out in them. By the way I didn't know they were sisters and for some unknown reason I find it very endearing. I never tire of seeing them and the gorgeous landscapes that you are so lucky to live in.

  10. Betty M - thank you so much. Happy new year to you too.

Mystica - Thank you. So glad you like the lichen. And of course you are always so kind about the dear dogs.

Anne - so fascinating about your grandmother. And huge CONGRATULATIONS on your wedding. I hope it was a glorious day.

Sarah - happy new year. So glad you approve of the resolution.

Colby - so pleased you like the dog with flowers. It makes me laugh.

Em - thank you so much. Happy new year to you too.

Christina - a great 2011 to you too. And ditto about your own lovely blog.

Helena - what a lovely thing to say. Thank you.

Liz - you are kind. I AM very lucky and like putting up my daily photographs because it reminds me never to take this place for granted. And the photographs do owe everything to great subject matter (esp the canines of course) and my brilliant Olympus PEN, which is the best camera I ever had.

Lovely comments, thank you so much, and I hope 2011 is brilliant for all of you. :)

  11. Oh dear - the first sepia tint photo reminds me of this post "http://littera-abactor.livejournal.com/7748.html" , which reduces me to tears every time I read it and I have spent several days weeding with the help of Winston Bull Terrier. So I must be in the dotty zone about now :)

However, DO NOT stop the lovely photos of trees, hills and especially Their Ladyships. A continued thank you for the true sanity of your blog.
