Quick bonus post

By Tania Kindersley.

Since I seem to have embarked on this theme, I suppose I might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb.

If you are feeling starved of time, cash and inspiration, all these delightful presents can be found for under £10 on the John Lewis website. I adore John Lewis. It is not fashionable or whimsical or cutting edge. It is like a tremendous old aunt in comfortable shoes. I like that it is a co-operative, devoted to keeping its employees happy. I like that it is Never Knowingly Undersold. I like that it has the best customer service in the world, and when you ring up you get to speak to a real person. I like that it proves that capitalism does not have to be red in tooth and claw.

  1. Great post! I love all of the notebooks and Penguin pencils. I know that this post was supposed to be about what to give other people for christmas, but as I have nearly finished my christmas present buying, I may buy something from this selection for myself.

  2. Despite all your apologies, I am enjoying your present-buying postings. I was thinking the other day how much I miss John Lewis now I live in Dublin... there is something so comforting and sensible and trustworthy about it all. There's none of that 'computer says no' mentality. Best wishes.

  3. Spangle - aren't the Penguin pencils heaven? Think you should buy some for yourself. One of the things I do but did not dare admit in the post is to give myself a couple of secret presents, which I actually wrap up and everything, just in case other people do not give me what I really want. (Is that a TERRIBLE admission?)

Sarah - so glad. Don't know why I had angst about suddenly doing presents. I think it is because I get so cross about all those didactic magazine articles at this time of year. So glad you love John Lewis as much as I do. I imagine Brown Thomas is not quite the same.

  4. I love John Lewis too- and actually used to work for them- people who have only ever worked for them have no idea they are born, it is like working for family... anyway they are wonderful even with their funny beige interiors and strange cafes- I like nothing more than wandering about the Oxford St one amusing myself- it is excellent for people watching, especially British eccentric people watching (which is my favourite kind)

  5. Rose - how lovely to find it is as wonderful as I think. And so agree about the often eccentric nature of the customers - in the best British sense.
